SMI is looking for a permanent, full-time Claims Adjuster to join our growing team at our Head Office in Saskatoon. Reporting to the Manager, Claims & Administration, the successful candidate will be responsible for investigating, evaluating, negotiating, and settling Personal Lines, Auto, Farm, Commercial, Liability and Injury claims. Experience in and knowledge of insurance principles and practices is necessary for this position.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of five (5) years of experience in the industry and an active involvement in completion of the CIP designation. This position requires an individual with an outgoing personality, strong interpersonal skills, good written and oral communication, as well as strong interviewing and negotiation skills.

full-time position of Manager, Data Architecture. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Technology &
Intelligence, the successful candidate will visualize the data blueprint and is accountable for utilizing
technology and information management methodologies in on-premises and cloud data environments.
This position is accountable for the design, development, deployment and maintenance of data
environments, the integrity and accuracy of data and data solutions, data governance and security, and
ensuring data availability to internal stakeholders. The Manager, Data Architecture serves as a member of
the management team; provides leadership, coaching and direction to staff; and contributes to the
development of corporate strategy and future planning.

As Manager, Data Architecture YOU Will Be Responsible For:

• Managing the day-to-day operations of the architecture team; answering questions; monitoring
the general workload and production levels.
• Managing the design of the enterprise data management framework to ensure it aligns with
enterprise strategy and architecture best practices.
• Developing, deploying, and maintaining effective data governance policies, standards, and
practices.
• Managing data resiliency through collaboration and oversight of the data asset through business
continuity planning.
• Overseeing business requirements into technical specifications. This includes, but is not limited to,
data streams, integration, transformation, databases, and data warehouses.
• Participating in the development of department budgets.
• Collaborating with business, technology, and intelligence stakeholders to formulate ideas and

• Managing key third-part partnerships.

• Mentoring and coaching to continuously upskill knowledge and expertise in researching emerging
technologies, new models, vendor solutions, and market opportunities to protect the Company

management of architecture staff.

What We Need From YOU!

• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Five (5) or more years related experience coupled with three (3) or more years of leadership
experience.
• Strong technical knowledge of data architecture, data solution design, analysis of existing
architecture, data pipelines, data lake development, Data Warehouse, ETL development, data
governance, data security, data engineering and development on AWS and Azure, My SQL,
Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL.
• General insurance industry and marketing knowledge is an added benefit.
• A good understanding of how underwriting profitability impacts overall corporate results and
capital requirements. The ability to understand and interpret financial statements and participate
in the business planning process.
• Ability to visualize, articulate, conceptualize, or solve problems by making decisions that are logical
and reasonable given the available information.
• Detail oriented with a commitment to innovation.
• Project management and coordinating skills with the proven ability to handle multiple tasks and
make decisions in a rapidly changing environment. Able to set priorities for self and overall

SMI is looking for a permanent, full-time Underwriter to join our growing team. Reporting to the Underwriting Supervisor, the successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing, evaluating, rating and processing new business, renewals and revisions for risks complex in nature.

The successful candidate will have a minimum two years related insurance experience along with the completion of at four Insurance Institute courses and a positive commitment towards the completion of the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation. The individual must have knowledge of policy rating and underwriting practices, excellent communication skills as well as the ability to lead, motivate and train other employees. The ability to establish and maintain effective relationships and to deliver quality service are also essential skills required for this position.

As Farm/Commercial Underwriter YOU Will Be Responsible For:

• Reviewing applications, renewals and revisions to existing policies for insurance to determine the nature and degree of non-standard and/or problematic risks. Researching and obtaining additional information on risk if required.
• Determining if risk is acceptable, is acceptable with restrictions, or should be declined based on analysis and evaluation of all information pertinent to the risk within the authority limit guidelines of this position.
• Determining action required to improve risk and recommends restrictions to coverages or revisions to deductibles or premiums based on analysis of the risk.
• Determining appropriate rates, applying applicable discounts and surcharges and calculating premiums.
• Negotiating with brokers as to the conditions, limitations, rates and premiums to apply.
• Determining percentage of involvement in subscription policies.
• Processing new applications, renewals, revisions, cancellations and quotes.
• Answering inquiries orally and/or in writing and acts as a technical resource to brokers, insureds, and other employees on policy exclusions, wordings, coverages, and premiums.
• Developing correspondence to request information and to explain underwriting requirements and decisions.
• Training, reviewing and approving the work of less senior underwriting and clerical staff.
• Performing quality control checks.
• Testing the accuracy of information systems including updates to the system.

As Manager, Product Development YOU Will Be Responsible For:

  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the product development team by providing clear leadership and direction and monitoring key performance metrics.
  • Develops a high functioning team; provides support in recruitment, training, work assignments, professional development, and performance management of product development staff.
  • Under the direction of the AVP, Underwriting, responsible for the development, maintenance, enhancement, and implementation of insurance products, including writing/revising policy wordings, drafting proposals, and creating other relevant documents such as application forms, and questionnaires.
  • Presents new products or innovations to the leadership team.
  • Conducts industry research and analyzes competitors’ products and wording changes to ensure comprehensive information is available to support product development decisions.
  • Performs analysis of existing products to identify enhancement opportunities and form product development recommendations supported by data and customer driven insights.
  • Monitors regulatory changes in applicable jurisdiction and communicates with provincial Superintendents to obtain authorization where required to ensure product compliance with Insurance Acts and other regulation.
  • Responds to coverage and wording interpretation inquiries from underwriters and claims personnel.
  • Participates in the establishment of product pricing and risk selection criteria to achieve the company’s mix of business targets and underwriting profitability objectives.

What We Need From YOU!

  • A Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP) designation.
  • Five (5) or more years underwriting experience in the property and casualty insurance industry or extensive equivalent insurance experience; coupled with three (3) or more years demonstrated experience in a product development function and three or more years supervising high performing teams.
  • Excellent communication, writing and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in completing high quality research and analysis and a strong understanding of and experience in insurance product development.
  • Extensive knowledge of insurance underwriting principles and practices, business processing operations and the impact of underwriting on the business of insurance. Extensive understanding of product research & development practices.
  • A general understanding of business development and insurance distribution channels along with the ability to build strong relationships with brokers and other stakeholders.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Underwriting, the successful candidate will provide expertise in risk improvement recommendations aimed to help policyholders manage their exposures & reduce the frequency and severity of losses. This position is located at our Head Office in downtown Saskatoon.

 

As Loss Control Inspector YOU Will Be Responsible For:

  • Organizing and carrying out inspections to evaluate properties and report on-site observations for insurance underwriting purposes. Identifying and analyzing hazards and critical issues, measuring buildings, and taking photographs, as well as inspecting features, such as fire prevention systems, heating equipment, and fuel storage
  • Converses with policyholders and brokers to understand the history of the property, any risks, and answer any questions they might have.
  • Develops risk improvement recommendations based on identified risk
  • Identifies trends and key issues based on field work performed and recommends solutions to management in order achieve positive results.
  • Prepares detailed reports that include identifying the fundamental construction and equipment details, risk assessment, and replacement cost value verification.
  • Works with our underwriting team by performing risk-level rating recommendations
  • Designs, develops and implements risk management, loss prevention and loss control informational training based on data and best practices for employees.
  • Represents the Company by executing a high level of service and always maintaining

 

What We Need From YOU!

  • Completion of Grade 12
  • A CIP designation with the Insurance Institute of Canada or the completion of at least five Insurance Institute courses along with a positive commitment toward the completion of the CIP designation within three years from the date of placement in the job.
  • Minimum three (3) years experience performing on-site insurance inspections and completing insurance loss control surveys and reports.
  • Expert knowledge in understanding underwriting principles of risk control, hazard identification and risk mitigation processes.
  • Excellent knowledge of applicable building & fire protection codes, construction for farm and commercial operations, plumbing, heating, electrical and fire safety.
