SMI was formed by a group of pioneer farmers in 1908 to meet their mutual need for readily available, affordable insurance protection. With that pioneer spirit in mind, SMI has prospered for over 100 years, providing security and service to its many policyholders.
At SMI, policyholders have voting rights with the Company and elect a Board of Directors to oversee the operation of the Company and establish long-term strategic goals and objectives.
SMI is a federally licensed property and casualty (P&C) insurer operating in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba with annual direct written premiums in excess of $83 million.
The Company is subject to various Insurance Acts, both federal and provincial, and to regulation by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI). SMI, with approximately 75 employees, distributes its products through the independent brokerage system.
The Company’s head office is located in Saskatoon with service offices in Calgary, Regina and Winnipeg.
